The Overland Park Host Lions Club is heavily involved with our local community. The following identifies some of the activities and organizations we support:
Eye examinations and glasses for school children
Needy chidren are referred to our club by the school nurses of the Shawnee Mission, Blue Valley, and Olathe school districts. We provide eye exams and glasses via Kansas University Medical Center's Ophthalmology Department.
Kansas State School for the Blind (KSSB)
Funds were raised to create a $120,000 endowment fund to provide track and field programs to children attending KSSB. Club members volunteer to assist with the running of multi-state track meets. We have just launched a new program to help fund an Assistive Technology Loan Library.
Deanna Rose Children's Farmstead
The club has funded the installation of audio domes and discriptive braille signs to provide visually impared visiters with an understanding of the exhibits.
Children's Center for the Visually Impaired
CCVI is one of the premiere pre-schools for the blind. It serves the Kansas City regional area and is located just south of the Plaza. Funds are donated to this worthy school. Club members volunteer to help during the Michael-Forbes Trolley Run, CCVI's largest fund raiser and one of the largest 10 kilometer races in the nation.
Salvation Army
We ring bells for the Salvation Army each year at Christmas time. We tend to be within the top 3 single day bell ringing contributors.
